Harper and Atticus

Maybe it was Harper Lee's new/old book, "Go Set a Watchman" that got me thinking again about a subject that's been in my occipital region for years. Or maybe it was watching pieces of "The Abolitionists" on PBS again.

It's a group of folks so ignored and yet so vital to the USA we live in today...well, at least the better angels of it. Quiet as its kept, there's a good chance I would not be living in the USA today if not for these amazing, but little appreciated people. Some call them (derisely) "do-gooders", "goody-two-shoes", "school marms", "meddlers", "patsies" or they lump them under the all-purpose epithet, "nigger-lovers".

So here I go...again, starting a blog that I plan to become at least one book about some of the most maligned and misunderstood people the world has ever known - the people old "black" folks, including Oprah's momma, used to lovingly call "good white folks".

I think I'm way, way overdue. What about you?
